About the MK3 Cube
The MK3 Cubes are the result of refining the Cube design and finding a trusted manufacturer to deliver the best possible Cubes to you. The process is niche to say the least, and making each Cube is a lengthy process that only takes a small miscalculation to completely disrupt. What you have here is extremely rare, and we’re really happy to have you as part of the small group who own one.
First Use
As the Cube has been in transit and exposed to various temperatures, it might need to be warmed up in your hands to get moving again as the tolerances it’s been made to only take a slight variance in temperature to affect its function. The drop times of the pins will vary slightly as each part has been finished by hand to ensure the best fit. If your pins are a little stiff, they likely just need working in; we recommend you get fiddling!
The pins can be removed but, and this is very important, each pin has been fitted to a specific side and will only work in the side it has been fitted to the correct way up. If both pins have fallen out and you are not sure what side they come from, test them gently. If a pin feels as though there is resistance as it goes in, don’t force the pin down as this can cause the pin to get damaged or stuck.
The best way to find out how far a pin can be extended is let the pins slide out about half an inch then gently pull on one side only until the pin is fully extended.
To put a pin back in the chamber, place the point-end into the slot and turn the pin slowly until it is lined up with the rest of the hole. It should then slide in without any trouble and without catching the edge of the slot.
Please don’t remove any lubricants you find on the pins: the lubricant is important for the Cube to function at its best. You wouldn’t run an engine without any oil, after all!
The Cube is stainless steel but not indestructible and dropping it will cause damage to both the Cube and the surface the Cube comes into contact with.
Care
As it’s stainless steel, the Cube is resistant to corrosion and rust. This means it shouldn’t need much attention beyond an occasional dust if you haven’t used it in a while. As the precision engineering of the Cube is quite delicate, you’ll want to avoid getting water inside the chambers, so a dry microfibre or lint-free cloth will be enough to clean the Cube up.
If you think your Cube is dirty and needs a bit of extra TLC we have a handy video below to revive your Cube.
